DEFENSE & SECURITY 2017 is the 8th biennial edition of the show which has grown bigger and more important every year. Leonardo signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Defence Technology Institute (DTI) of Thailand on November 8th covering technology transfer and the establishment of helicopter maintenance, repair & overhaul (MRO) capabilities in the country, should the AW101 aircraft be ordered for use by the Police, Army, Air Force and Navy.

In this context, Defence Technology Institute (DTI), the Thai Ministry of Defence’s research and development agency, has ambitions to develop Thailand’s defence technology capability and to build up the local defence industry. Berlin is pursuing ambitious plans for security and defence, with significant potential for the Bundeswehr and European partner militaries. In the long-term, the Bundeswehr could well become Europe’s indispensable army, with Germany as a “framework nation” contributing decisively to NATO’s readiness. This will require the future German government to accept an unaccustomed politico-military leadership role. It will also be necessary to increase defence spending for the long term.

Last week, Col. Gen. Oleg Salyukov, commander-in-chief of the Russian Army, paid a 3-day visit to Thailand. Reporting on the visit, the first of its kind in a decade, has been extremely sparse. That has left experts wondering whether Bangkok is considering the purchase of Russian T-90 tanks to replace its canceled order of Ukrainian T-84s.
