FX-2 Project: Brazil and Sweden Agree on the Gripen NG

07/29/2015

Brazil and Sweden have found a common denominator allowing them to sign the financing agreement of the Gripen NG project. The agreement on the interest rates was reached by Defence Minister Jaques Wagner during a meeting with representatives of the Swedish Defence and Security Export Agency, FXM, on Wednesday, July 29.

With the end of the negotiations between the countries, the contract will now follow legal procedures leading to final approval in the Senate.

"We have agreed on the interest rate from the date of contract signature. This is a success for both countries and consolidates our strategic partnership," said Jaques Wagner.

About Gripen NG

Brazil selected the Gripen NG to upgrade the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) in late 2013, and in 2014 signed the commercial contract. The Brazilian Air Force will receive 36 Gripen NG fighter aircraft made by the Swedish company Saab. The first aircraft will be delivered in 2019 and the last in 2024.

More than just fighters, the Gripen NG project is about technology. The contract involves the training of Brazilian pilots and ground engineers in Sweden, as well as logistical support and the transfer of technology to Brazilian industries.

The acquisition of the aircraft will bring benefits that go beyond increasing the operational capacity of the Brazilian Air Force. Through an ambitious technology transfer program, Brazil no longer wishes to simply be a buyer, but wants to become a provider of next-generation combat aircraft.

The contract provides for the manufacture of 15 of the 36 aircraft in Brazil, including all eight two-seater aircraft, a variant created especially for the FAB.

Brazil's participation in the development of the project will give Brazilian aerospace industry access to all levels of technology, including to the Gripen source codes. The technology transfer program will include items such as hardware integration, avionics, software and aircraft systems, among others.

Exhibition

In June, more than 10,000 Brazilians found out a little more about the aircraft that will renew the fighter component of the Brazilian Air Force. A full-scale model of a Gripen NG was exhibited on the Esplanade of Ministries in Brasilia. One of the pilots who conducted training in Sweden was on site.

When the first unit is delivered in 2019, Brazil will be the only country in the Southern Hemisphere to deploy an aircraft capable of "supercruise" flight.

-- The July issue of the Air Force journal Notaer highlights some of the attributes of the Gripen NG aircraft that make it a really new fighter.
-- The latest issue of the Aerovisão magazine features the offsets of US$ 9.1 billion that Brazil will receive for the acquisition of 36 fighters.
