Rostec to Create a Protected Skype Analogue for the State and Industry

05/24/2017

Rostec State Corporation, Russian companies such as OMMG Technology and Mind Labs are creating a prototype of a standardized communications system – a Russian analogue of Skype with a high level of information security for government agencies and industry.

The system is being developed in companies forming part of Bulat, a subsidiary of Ruselectronics (part of Rostec State Corporation), and Rostelecom. The system is to be presented for the first time during the CIPR-2017 Conference (Information Technology of Industrial Russia) held from May 24 through May 26 in Innopolis (the Republic of Tatarstan).

The standardized system will be used in organizations and institutions and will be a benchmark in terms of information security. It combines telephony and messenger functions: phone and video calls, sending text messages, and files of any format can be sent to one or several subscribers within the corporate network. The system does not access the Internet – therefore, it cannot be deciphered by hackers or foreign intelligence agencies.

"Recent cyberattacks have made it clear that most information systems produced abroad are vulnerable," says deputy general director of JSC Ruselectronics Arseniy Brykin. "As a counter to this, we are creating Russian IT and telecommunications products which certainly contain no "surprises" and are properly protected from undue external interference. This is an almost unrivalled development in terms of functionality; it is also unique in terms of information protection. It is a modern and convenient system which allows confidential information to be transferred in any format."

The development is based on the OMMG communications platform (messenger), the Mind service for videoconferences and conference calls, as well as software and hardware by Bulat, a multipoint control unit and professional terminal equipment.

At present, a working prototype of the system is being built. As part of the CIPR-2017 Conference, partners have agreed to continue joint work and plan to sign a relevant cooperation agreement.

The CIPR-2017 Conference will be held from May 24 through May 26 with the support of Russian ministries such as the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media (Minkomsvyaz), as well as the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan and Rostec State Corporation.
